Now is the time to be happy and be yourself.
When I decided I would go on exchange this year to Japan, I decided that this would be the year I learn to love myself, understand myself and learn about myself.
For years I went through life just doing what it was giving me and every day I would come home, study, pass my exams and see what everyone else in the world was up to.
When I graduated grade 12 I had a sudden realisation that I didn’t really know who I was. I had gone through school doing what life gave me, watching other people’s lives, going out if my friends asked me and really nothing else. It was then I realised I wasn’t creating my own path, I was walking the path that life gave me.
I suddenly had the urge to express myself. To express myself in all I do. In other words, to be myself.
Around this time, I read somewhere “Living Fearlessly by Loving Powerfully” and it gave me something to work for. I’ve learnt that trading fear for curiosity and gratitude is key to living fearlessly and embarking on the adventure to be who you were born to be. This is the purest form of love you can unconditionally express to yourself. It’s not a selfish act. Rather, it’s the highest regard you can have for the gift that is your life.
Choosing this trade and living fearlessly is a brave act that requires the adoption of a new mind-set. It’s a learning response that puts curiosity in front of fear during life’s challenges. So firstly, I set out to try things I’ve always wanted to do and from now on express myself in everything I do. I sat down and started learning to write, learning to draw, learning to paint, learning to play the guitar, learning to love myself, learning to be brave, use my creativity in design, and learning to help others in more ways. Everything I’ve always wanted to do as a person and express myself that way to the world. This was only the first step off the pathway I’ve been walking on for most of my life.
I thought about my dream and my dream was simple. A lifetime of supportive parents and constantly hearing “be yourself”, “do what makes you happy”, and my dad saying, “if my family is happy and we’re together, I’m happy, I don’t need anything else”. It was constant inspiration for me just to live a happy and healthy life for me and the people around me. So, I set out to do just that. I’m on a journey to understand and love myself so I can then fully understand and love others.
Learn to live fearlessly and you will learn the feeling of truly being alive. Leave your positive print everywhere you go, on everyone you meet and you’ll slowly change the world. One day I will say “I did it”.
